Where do ideas come from?
So, if you’re a creative person, I’m sure you’ve heard people ask, “Where do your ideas come from?” or “Where do you get your ideas?” right?
So, where do they come from? Well, the answer is pretty honest and simple: they come from nowhere! 🙂
I mean, yes, I keep myself in check with what’s going on in the world, what’s being designed, and what’s currently “in theme.” It really shows me how some things are possible, and thank God when there are ready-made things to use. I mean, we can really think and create everything we imagine, but is it really practical? What I like to do is combine things. I see many things out there, and when a certain place or venue comes to mind, it just clicks—what’s the best combination to use.
From my perspective, design has two aspects. One is that we create things to solve a problem. If you look around, everything in this world was created by someone—even the cup you’re holding or the computer you’re clicking. They all stem from one simple idea: to solve something, to make things better. In my work, I solve problems by designing spaces where people can sit and eat, plan furniture, or whatever the practical end purpose may be.
The other aspect is definitely expressing our soul through creativity. The design concept has no limitations on what we can imagine or create. The only limitations are those imposed by our reality—whether it’s money, the space we’re creating in, the timeline, or the materials themselves, or whatever tangible restriction may exist.
So, what I do in my work is all about combining these two aspects: solving the problem and, in doing so, giving my soul the freedom to express itself. The more freedom I have to express myself artistically, the better the outcome. There’s nothing more I could ask from my clients than to truly trust me.
Now, I did say that ideas come from nowhere, and that’s the truth. They usually just pop into my head.
I think the bigger question here is: How do we get to that place where ideas just pop into our heads? And I’m not saying that only creative people get ideas—anyone can be creative. Even a banker can be creative. Anybody can be creative when solving different problems. That’s the best thing in life: anything is possible, any problem has a solution—you just have to keep yourself open-minded, resourceful, and let these ideas really come to you.
And I’m sure everybody has noticed that when we’re stressed, not sleeping well, and overthinking every detail, no ideas or solutions seem to pop into our heads.
I think for every normal person, to keep their sanity, they need to meditate. And no, it doesn’t mean you sit on the floor and hum all the time. It means getting yourself into a relaxed state of mind. Even listening to rock music can be relaxing for someone. What I do is really enjoy walking in nature. I love, love the water. It’s kind of strange, though—I’m a little scared to dive into the ocean or anywhere I can’t feel the bottom, as I nearly drowned in my childhood—but it still has a healing effect on me. What I’ve also started doing lately is creating or visualizing things in a meditative state, where I can run my own creative energy.
And to keep that energy flowing, it’s really nothing more than keeping yourself in balance: eat well, sleep well, move around, do your work, and most importantly, don’t forget to breathe, notice, and observe.
