Asking for Help or Getting Help?
I have felt lost in my life many times, and there were moments when I needed help—advice, a mentor, a wise person to guide me. When my interior design projects no longer sparked my passion, I found myself searching for something else. So, what else? Well, at first, I came up with the idea of creating ready-made design walkthrough videos of buildings that weren’t yet built. It would give people a glimpse of what the inside could look like. I loved working in 3D design, so it seemed like a good idea. But when the opportunity finally came to dive deeper into it, I found myself asking: Do I really want to sit behind a computer for 8 hours a day, just staring at the screen? The answer was no. I was so mad at myself, as if I were starting all over again, but the opportunity to participate in the 2019 volunteer project as an event designer sparked a new passion in me.That’s when I decided I wanted to become an event designer.
At the time, I didn’t have any contacts in that field, so I reached out to acquaintances to ask if they knew anyone who could help. But asking for help always felt like trying to sell a tractor in a beauty shop. I could shout, “I need help!” and no one would notice. We all say it’s okay to ask for help, and that we should do it more often, but there seems to be a difference between asking for help and actually getting it. Asking for help often comes across with a sense of desperation, and yes, when we ask, we are often desperate. But getting help feels different—it’s when someone offers their support without you asking.
So, how do you get help when you really need it? From my experience,…… you don’t. This is the moment when YOU have to pull yourself out of the hole. There is no one else who can help you except yourself. And when you start doing that, you’ll begin to attract the help you need.
When I realized I wanted to offer more than just basic event design, I had to figure out what “more” meant for me. And I did. 🙂
I’ve read tons of books by great leaders and listened to countless inspirational speakers. And yes, you can test out every suggestion they give. I did, too. But in the end, I can tell you that none of those books or speakers can tell YOUR story. You are the one who must figure it out.
Guidance can come from many places, but before making any transformative decisions, ask yourself: Is this truly your voice, or is it someone else speaking for you?
So, for those of you who are unsure of where to go next or what to do with your business… YOU got this!
This photo holds deep personal meaning, taken in Bali in 2019. I was definitely feeling lost at the time, but it was also the moment when I truly saved myself.
